As a young kid, Scott Summers dabbled in this and that, becoming a
ladies man and a weapons expert of the elite team of superhumans known
as X-Factor, a strike force brought together under the auspices of
Section X -- a government-funded organization dedicated to the
protection of the planet. After the team disbanded, Scott was asked by
Charles Xavier to lead a group of mutants known as the X-Men. X-Factor
disbanded for reasons only known by Section X and its members. The X-Men
were well-renowned super heroes, famed for their great accomplishments,
one of which is the defeat of the mutant Onslaught. But as soon as the
world found out their true identities -- that they were mutants -- homo
superior -- individuals whose genetic makeup has given them awesome
abilities, people turned their backs on them. Some hated them but most
feared them. People have asked the government to take action against the
X-Men and other mutant and as a result, they created
"Sentinels" and X-Calibre, a covert team of genetically
engineered superhumans whose sworn purpose is to eradicate all mutants
on earth. Chaos soon ruled. People have died. Mutant rebels have
terrorrized many. Heroes like Captain America, Iron Man, along with
X-Men members Storm, Colossus and Nightcrawler have been killed by the
notorious X-Calibre. Gambit, Angel and Beast have left the team. In this
chaotic world, only few are left remaining. Alongside Cyclops are: Rogue
-- whose mutant power is to absorb the memories, abilities and physical
characteristics of anyone with whom she comes into flesh-to-flesh
contact; Phoenix -- one of the most powerful telepaths in the world;
Wolverine -- who possesses heightened senses, accelerated healing factor
and retractable adamantium claws that are housed in his forearms;
Quicksilver -- the son of the mutant called Magneto and his wife, the
gypsy named Magda, Pietro Maximoff is a mutant who possesses the
superhuman capacity to think and move at great speeds; and Cable -- a
mutant whose physical attributes have been enhanced to superhuman
levels. His principal mutant powers are his vast telepathic and
telekinetic abilities. He is a highly accomplished warrior and battle
strategist, highly adept in multiple forms of hand-to-hand combat and in
the uses of many kinds of weaponry, both of the 20th and 40th Centuries.
Wednesday, 8:05 A.M., 250 feet below the Green River Housing Project,
Brooklyn, New York...
The X-Men went down the Morlock tunnels in an attempt to stop Mystique
and the Brotherhood. Both groups were watching the evening news,
listening to the riots that occurred last night. "This was the
scene late last night as riot broke out and fire swept throughout the
city," a news reporter said mildly, "hundreds of mutants took
to the streets to express their frustration and anger over an incident
that happened at the Green River Housing Project yesterday afternoon.
Seven people believed to be members of the Mutant Liberation Front were
killed by the Police during a hostage rescue operation. The action has
been condemned by some who feel that no attempt was made to negotiate a
more peaceful resolution. With me now to respond to these accusations is
Police Commissioner Charles Baines."
"Come on, Cyclops," Mystique said. "We've got better
things to do than listen to some arrogant, self-serving son of a sewer
rat talk about how deeply committed he is to protecting all the
wonderful people of this city from hordes of hideous mutant."
Mystique then looked at the Morlocks, who had sad expressions on their
faces, and said, "Arise. For today you come of age. A great new age
of power and respect. No more will you feel inferior and unsuitable.
From this day forward, you will have the freedom, the power and the
right to control your own destiny. Today we will have our vengeance. We
will avenge the past. We will release our most hidden anger, break the
cycle of abuse that has stripped us of our dignity and respect."
Mystique raised her hand. "Today, I give you my permission to
destroy those who have sought to destroy you," Mystique said
strongly.
"Unified, motivated, and organized. Xavier was right about
everything but the timeframe. Mystique is way ahead of schedule,"
Cyclops thought to himself. He then turned to Mystique and said, "I
can't let you do that, Raven. You damn well know that."
"What do you expect to gain by all of this?" Cable asked.
"I'm going to hold the city hostage until our demands are
met," Mystique responded to the Askani'son's question," and
I'm going to do it with a virus we stole from Section X."
"What sort of demands do you want?" Phoenix asked. Mystique
looked at Phoenix shortly and then walked away, not giving an answer to
her question.
"She wants to set herself up as the absolute ruler of a sovereign
state for mutants only," Cyclops replied.
"Oh great. Just what we need," Rogue exclaimed.
"Just as Cyclops clearly said, you know we can't let you do
that," Quicksilver told Mystique.
"Who's going to stop us? You?" Mystique laughed softly. "Dont
make me laugh. I think you have overstayed your welcome, don't you
think?" Mystique disappeared in the darkness leaving the X-Men all
alone.
"I smell something. Can't you smell it?" Wolverine asked,
sensing that there was danger arising.
"It always smells bad down here. What do you expect? It's a damn
sewer," Quicksilver responded with a grin in his face.
"Not this bad," Wolverine emphasized.
Out of the shadows came Mutant X.
"You've got a lot o' nerve, Wolverine. Talkin' about me like that.
Specially since i went out and got this spiffy new suit just for you.
Whadda ya think?" Mutant X obnoxiously said.
NEXT ISSUE: It's the X-Men vs. the Brotherhood! After all these
are over, Cyclops leaves the team. Read Cyclops #2 next month to find
