Anyway on with the show.

"Jean, we are going to be late!"

"I said I'm coming."

Jean Grey put down her hairbrush and sighed, as she looked hard at herself in the mirror. She was still good looking. She had to admit it. Her thick red hair was still as shiny as ever and the past few years hadn't taken their toll on her face. It was still as clear and free of lines as ever.

'Well, I am only thirty-five. That's young right?'

These days she didn't know. She felt herself getting older and Scott bless him was not much help.

He was as blind as ever. (No pun intended) He was still supportive as always and kind and gentle. But she couldn't remember the last time that he had said he loved her. She sighed.

'I'm being ridiculous. I know Scott loves me. I bathe in that feeling every day, but it's not the same as hearing those three little words.'

She looked down at her hands. She fingered the simple but beautiful gold band embedded with one small little diamond absently. She took it off and looked at it. 'Five years it's been five years since he gave me this. I'm still wearing it but nothing seems to be happening, it's like we are stuck literally.'

Flash back (Five years previously).

"Scott, I'm tired. Slow down."

"Oh come on it's not much further, Lazy"

"Huh, Lazy! I'm going to get you for that!" Jean ran after Scott laughing. She caught up with him easily. He was laden down with the picnic basket after all. She grabbed his hand and pulled him down to the ground, laughing breathlessly. He dropped the basket and watched helplessly as it rolled back down the hill.

"Now, Look what you did! I’m going to have to get that!"

"Oh forget it." She kissed him gently on the lips.

"Yeah," He said smiling, running his hands through her hair.

"You’re right." He returned the kiss, deepening it. Jean broke off slightly and gently nibbled his lower lip. She kissed him again and sighed happily as she lay her head on his chest gently.

Happy and content.

She felt his hands stroking her back and looked up at him. The sun reflected his glasses and brought out copper and rich chestnut highlights in his hair. He smiled down and her and pulled her closer.

"You hungry?"

"Nope" He smiled, "Guess what, I’m not either."

Jean laughed at his expression and leaned up against him. Scott bent to kiss her and then pulled away.

"What’s wrong?"

"Nothing." He said as he sat up and turned away from her. She sat up.

Worriedly she tried to search his thoughts for some clue but she couldn’t. He had blocked her. For the first time in over ten years he had cut her out. Jean felt tears come to her eyes.

"Scott, Scott what’s wrong?" She edged closer and was taken aback when he turned towards her suddenly. He stood up and pulled Jean up too.

"Sorry, I had to do that but…" Jean looked down at his hands. A small velvet box lay in one of Scott’s hands.

"Scott?" She whispered. He took her hand and squeezed it gently before opening the box. There nestled in white satin was a perfect little ring. It was the most beautiful piece of jewellery she had ever seen. Scott took it out of its box.

Jean noticed his hand was trembling. She smiled. He looked up at her and bit his lip. No one knew but her that he did that when he was really nervous.

"Jean" He said falteringly.

"Yes?"

"Wait"

"What?" Jean smiled and happiness filled her heart as Scott bent down on one knee. He looked up at Jean and took a deep breath. Jean’s stomach was doing somersaults.

He began again.

"Jean, I love you. I’ve loved you for years. I think that in some ways I loved you even before we met. You’re my soulmate. You’re the one person in the world that I can turn to and know immediately that everything will be okay. I know I don’t show it as often as I should but you are the most important person in the world for me. I’d do anything to make you happy. I’d die for you."

"Scott…"

"And I know that it took me a long time to say it, but I want you to know that I will love you until I die and beyond that. Jean, I can’t live without you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Jean Grey, I love you so much. Will you marry me?"

Jean let out the breath she had been holding. She felt like she was going to burst.

"Yes! Yes, Yes, Yes" She laughed as Scott got up and grabbed her around the waist and spun her around. They fell to the ground and Jean kissed Scott’s face all over.

"Wow, I should have done this a long time ago." He laughed as he took Jean’s hand. Jean watched as he gently slipped the ring on to her finger. She felt the delicious weight and felt her eyes well up.

"Hey," Scott said gently.

"I love you Scott."

"I love you too kiddo." They kissed deeply and hugged each other tightly as if it were painful to let go.

"Hey, do you wanna go back home or should we…"

"Oh we’re staying here." Jean said and pulled Scott even closer to her as they kissed again feeling the warmth of the sun on their backs and savouring the quietness of the countryside and the feeling of love from each other.

End flashback.

Jean looked down at the ring. Her eyes filled with tears as she remembered how happy she had been that day. It had been the happiest day of her life. She remembered going home and telling Ororo excitedly, the two of them staying up late with bridal magazines and laughing like teenagers.

Their wedding was planned for the year after. Jean and Scott had planned the perfect wedding and honeymoon and then….disaster.

The war with Magneto geared up a notch. Scott had been injured badly and was confined to bedrest. Then just as he got better, the anti-mutant hate groups stepped up their campaign of hatred and violence. Then Magneto kidnapped Senator Kelly, Rogue and Logan came into their lives. That had been over a year and a half ago.

The past while had been spent rebuilding after the pervious year and the number of students that joined the school doubled almost. Everywhere they looked there were obstacles. Scott seemed to have forgotten the plan too. Jean sighed.

‘Should I even wear this ring? What’s the point?’ She sighed again and wiped a tear from her eye.

‘I need to talk to Scott right now’ She resolved.

Bang Bang.

"Jean! Let’s go!"

Jean stood up with a start and opened the door.

Storm leaned against the wall, her face like thunder.

"Oh you ready!"

Jean swallowed hard.

"Yeah, Let’s go"

"You okay?"

"Yes, No, I’ll be fine"

"We’ll talk about it later, but first let’s go shopping"

Jean laughed as Ororo steered her down the hall.

‘Later, Yeah I have to talk to a lot of people later!’

To be continued.
